1,000 True Fans Theory says that an artist only needs 1,000 dedicated fans to achieve success. However, in today’s oversaturated online marketplaces, building an organic fanbase is more challenging than ever. The key to success remains connecting with fans authentically and directly, and that's where revenue sharing comes in as a groundbreaking solution for faster, more sustainable growth.
Instead of giving 20% of your earnings to a label, or paying for expensive marketing and promotion, you can turn your fans into the label—inviting hundreds or thousands of them to earn alongside you for doing what they already do: engaging with, loving, and sharing your work. This approach fosters loyalty and creates a deeper, direct connections that transcends consumption. Sharing revenue with fans, what we call "community splits", has been shown to increase engagement by 500% and in addition, you get the data, including email addresses and phone numbers, of all fans who participate, which is essential to your growth as an artist and your ability to sell more products.
This guide is tailored for Symphonic distribution service customers and will help you unlock two powerful benefits:
Faster Royalties: Receive up to 50% of your royalty revenues in realtime (same day) via from Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Pandora, Amazon, and YouTube Art Tracks, instead of waiting 3 months to receive payment from streaming activities.
Community Splits: Split a percentage of royalty revenues with up to 10,000 fans or collaborators. While all DSPs supported by Symphonic are eligible for revenue sharing, only Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Pandora, Amazon, and YouTube Art Tracks are eligible for realtime payouts.
You should follow these sections in order, however they are independent modules that you can complete separately as you get set up.
Add SHARE Protocol as a Payee. This guide is the foundation of adding SHARE Protocol, the backend system for distributing IP payments, as a payee in your Symphonic account. It is a prerequisite to all other capabilities.
Assign Royalty Splits to SHARE Protocol. This guide helps you assign royalties from any track in your Symphonic account to SHARE Protocol. Once this is done, the track will be ready to connect to a smart contract, which is the basic building block of high speed payments and revenue sharing.
Connect Track Earnings to a Smart Contract using a Form. This guide helps you create your own customized smart contract that sets up how payments flow, who collaborators are, and community split revenue sharing. Here's where you can choose to do things like simply receive your own earnings instantly, or share earnings with fans. For more advanced users, you can optionally use the Connect Track Earnings to a Smart Contract using SHARE SDK to achieve the same goal programmatically.
Receiving Realtime Royalty Payouts. Now that your track is connected to a smart contract and revenue is flowing from DSPs into it via SHARE Protocol, this guide will help you understand how to receive, understand and expect realtime payouts.
Cashing Out to Your Bank. This guide gives step by step instructions for cashing out your earnings from the blockchain into your bank account instantly.
